Background of the Study

In Asaba, cultural norms have historically shaped the roles and expectations of women in various aspects of community life, including politics. Traditional values often prescribe limited roles for women, restricting their participation in political decision-making (Obi, 2023). However, recent trends indicate a growing awareness and demand for gender equality in political representation. Despite these developments, deep-rooted cultural beliefs continue to hinder women’s full engagement in political activities (Ijeoma, 2024). This study investigates the extent to which cultural norms influence women’s political participation, examining both the traditional barriers and the emerging opportunities for female leadership. It considers how factors such as family expectations, community perceptions, and societal roles interplay with modern political aspirations (Chinwe, 2025). By engaging with female political leaders, activists, and community members, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and prospects for women in politics in Asaba, thereby offering insights for policy interventions that promote gender equity (Ngozi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

Cultural norms in Asaba have long been cited as barriers to women’s participation in politics, with traditional expectations limiting their roles (Uche, 2023). Despite progressive reforms, persistent cultural biases continue to undermine women’s political engagement. This dichotomy creates a challenging environment where women face both overt and subtle discrimination. The study seeks to uncover the specific cultural factors that restrict female political participation and to propose actionable strategies that can overcome these obstacles (Obi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To examine how cultural norms affect women’s political participation.

2. To identify specific barriers stemming from traditional beliefs.

3. To recommend strategies for enhancing women’s involvement in politics.

Research Questions:

1. What cultural norms limit women’s participation in politics in Asaba?

2. How do these norms manifest in political structures?

3. What interventions can promote greater gender equity in politics?

Research Hypotheses:

1. H1: Traditional cultural norms significantly impede women’s political participation.

2. H2: Societal expectations contribute to reduced female political representation.

3. H3: Policy interventions can mitigate the negative impact of cultural norms on women’s political engagement.

Significance of the Study

The study is significant as it offers insights into the cultural barriers affecting women in politics. The findings will be invaluable for policymakers and gender advocates seeking to create inclusive political environments that empower women while respecting cultural contexts (Ijeoma, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to examining the impact of cultural norms on women’s participation in politics in Asaba, Oshimili South Local Government Area, Delta State, focusing solely on local socio-cultural factors.

Definitions of Terms:

• Cultural Norms: Established societal rules and practices that shape behavior.

• Political Participation: Involvement in political activities and decision-making processes.

• Gender Equity: Fairness in treatment and opportunities for all genders.
